Tapas For You…From Mis Trucos!

One of the city’s most talked about restaurants joins our restaurant community!

Mis Trucos is a modern Mediterranean tapas bar set in a character house in the heart of the Davie Street shopping district. Chef Kris Barnholden combines classic French, Spanish and Italian recipes with the freshest local ingredients and his own modern twists. Some of Kris’ kitchens of note include working alongside Chef Bruce Poole at London’s Michelin-starred Chez Bruce (2000), Chef Joe Mercuri at Montreal’s famed Brontë (2005), and Chef Audrey Durbach at Vancouver’s Lucy Mae Brown (2002 – 2004) and Parkside (2008 – 2009).

Kris’s philosophy towards food is simple: a concise dish consisting of only a few components and made with top quality ingredients will always be greater than the sum of its parts. This philosophy as well as his personality shows on the plates at Mis Trucos – simple Mediterranean style cooking, prepared with fresh top-quality ingredients…and just a touch of whimsy.

A Couple of Places I Remember not to Forget.

With all of the restaurant options we have in Vancouver, it’s too easy to forget some of the good ones that we haven’t visited in a while. It’s not really a surprise though, since we can almost eat the entire globe in our city alone.  I mean, with all that we have at our disposal, it just makes sense that we try as many as we can.  That said, Il Nido and Wild Rice are restaurants I remember not to forget.

I find I can easily overlook Il Nido, not because I want to, but because it’s tucked in the back of that little courtyard at Robson & Thurlow (across from Joe Fortes).  But, once you remember and you’re there, you kick yourself for not coming back more often.  Aside from the food and Franco Felice (front-of-house owner), Il Nido’s patio (below) is a total hidden downtown gem!

Andrew Wong’s Wild Rice (above) is the first place where I tried Kung Po Chicken; I’ve been hooked for years.  I went down with a group of friends over the holidays and we passed around share plates and sampled as much as we could.  It’s the way to do this place.  You get to try it all and it’s wallet friendly.  Also, they’re completely committed to serving Ocean Wise Seafood!!!

Even if you don’t visit or revisit either of these restaurants, go remember one of your old ‘faves’, and see what’s new.

cheers.

3 great new spots join LetsGoForDinner.com!

A Kettle of Fish, Jolly’s Indian Bistro and Jeremiah’s Pub are the proud, new additions of LetsGoForDinner.com!  There’s a little something for all appetites.

Since 1979, Kettle (above) has been ‘over the top’ committed to the freshest possible seafood.  Today, their standards remain the same as they only use Ocean Wise Seafood…major plus!

Jolly’s is a small 30 seat Indian Bistro (below) that delivers flavour.  Jolly, the owner will win you over in about 30 seconds, too.  I’ve tried pretty much everything there, and for the price, you really can’t go wrong.  Look to spend about $20 per person.

Jeremiah’s Neighbourhood Pub (above) is exactly what its name says it is – a neighbourhood pub.  It’s a really good spot to watch the ‘Nucks, especially if you have a big group.  The downstairs portion offers modern TVs, and upstairs you can shoot some pool, play some darts, and keep on watching your game.  Oh yeah, it’s way above average pub grub, too.  Everyone needs a hang-out like this.

Hell’s Kitchen Re-Opens Tomorrow – dine there for less!

Beloved Kitsilano hot spot has been closed for filming.  Good news! They will re-open for business tomorrow, Friday March 26.

Just in time for weekend brunch too! Don’t forget to bring your Let’s Go For Dinner card with you for awesome savings. (more…)
