When I look for new spots to add, I try to find a little something for everyone. This one’s for those who love food inspired from the south, from New Mexico to New Orleans, mixed with a healthy portion of live jazz and blues. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays is when the live music happens, but on Sundays the live jazz is enjoyed during brunch!
I got to try 3 dishes. I shared the ’shrimp and grits with double smoked bacon, roast garlic, parsley and brown butter’ with a couple of the owners. I just followed their lead and dipped the shrimp right in the grits. Needless to say, they were delicious and didn’t stand a chance. The second dish was the ‘roast chicken breast with bacon-braised greens and mac ʻnʼ cheese’. The chicken was juicy and perfectly smothered in a homemade, sweet, and slightly spicy sauce that won me over on the first bite. They know their mac ‘n’ cheese, too. It’s made with double smoked bacon, creamy cheeses, and finished with a soul satisfying top crunch. The last item I tried was my favourite. It was a ‘gold and red beet salad with chèvre, arugula, black olive oil and pecan brittle’. I know it was the smallest of the 3, but the combination of the cheese and the beets just had summer all over it. I could literally eat this every day.

Another no-brainer in Gastown.

When I add new participating restaurants, I either get to try the food, or I don’t. In the case of BBQues in Yaletown, I got to eat. I might be a little biased because I already loved BBQ sandwiches, sweet and tangy sauces, ribs, and all the other good stuff, before I went to BBQues. These folks take pride in their homemade side dishes that go with the sandwiches, too. I dare you to try the maple-glazed cornbread!
The owner and I quickly chatted while we tore through a shared rack of ribs (yum). All of the sauces and marinades are homemade, which I think should be expected, but it’s still noteworthy. Then, Ben explained how he believes the vertical rotisserie is the beginning, and key, to getting his desired flavour. He explained that all meat starts there and get finished on the grill to achieve a balance of smoke and tenderness. You’re not going to get an argument out of me. I had a ‘Pulled Chicken Sandwich’ with 2 sides. I chose a strawberry and leafy based salad and ‘the cornbread’. It was great; it’s just my kind of food, loaded with flavour, and homemade.
This is an easy one to recommend if you’re looking for familiar, comforting, flavourful, barbecued food, where the owner is totally cool if you show up in flip flops. It hits the spot.

BBQues is at 1043 Mainland

Last week I had the opportunity and pleasure of experiencing Public Lounge. I spent a few hours there taking pictures, sampling some of chef Ben’s creations, and meeting just about the nicest people you can meet in this relaxed space.
I, Cameron (owner), and a few regulars shared a handful of plates: sweet paprika & brandy mussels, pistachio crusted halibut, and the bacon wrapped filet mignon. We all just grabbed a fork and devoured some of the tastiest food I’ve had on Main Street in some time. I don’t eat for a living, but I know when something tastes wonderful, and I can recognize a ‘happy food face’ when I see it. Cheeks are wide with food, eyes are usually closed for at least 3 seconds, and when the food is eventually consumed, a slew of complimentary adjectives immediately describe the taste sensation. Sometimes, food can just make you happy like nothing else.
Public is just straight good food and fresh ingredients (Ocean Wise), fun people, and creative bevies.
I already know that when I go again, I’ll be on the patio, pint in hand, making a tough decision on which nibbles to share!
I have no problem recommending this one. Enjoy!

The food at LE BISTRO is carefully prepared by Executive Chef Gilles Deroff, formerly at the Teahouse restaurant and the last 7 years at L’Hermitage restaurant on Robson street in Vancouver.
After finishing culinary school at age 16 and four years in Marseille , French Polynesia, and Paris as a chef in Brasseries and Bistros to acquire experience, Gilles came to Montreal to open a restaurant for some friends in 1980. Doing most of his career in French restaurants in Canada and the United States he brings with him over 35 years of experience and he is still passionate at cooking fresh traditional bistro food with a modern twist.
LE BISTRO is special for many reasons, but not enough can be said of the consistent, authentic French fare, the knowledgeable and friendly staff, and of course, the view.
LE BISTRO is ideal for conventions, tour groups, associations, weddings, fundraisers, birthdays and Christmas parties alike. They can accommodate up to 175 people using their private rooms and/or their wonderfully spacious patio which comes alongside a stunning view of the Vancouver harbour.
